New Legislation and Payments for scrap metal

The Government introduced the new Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 across the metal recycling industry in England and Wales from the 1st October 2013. This incorporates the Cash Ban introduced in December 2012 to combat metal theft, here at Copia Metals we trade strictly under this act. Therefore to be able to sell your scrap metal you will need to provide ID that confirms who you are and documentation to prove where you live. Despite the new rules and regulations, we have a system in place to provide a quick and easy service, this allows us to purchase your scrap metals and pay you with a range of immediate payment options.

On your 1st visit to our recycling centre please bring with you 1 item from list 1 and 1 item from list 2.

This will enable our friendly team in the office to set up a customer account in your name, once this has been done we can purchase your scrap metal.

List 1

  • Valid UK photo driving licence
  • Valid UK passport
  • Valid EEA passport
  • Valid UK immigration document
  • Valid EU National ID card
  • Valid UK Firearm or Shotgun licence

List 2 (must be dated within 3 months) 

  • Bank statement
  • Credit card statement
  • Mortgage statement
  • Council tax letter or statement
  • HMRC correspondence
  • Utility bill

Immediate funds onto a visa card, that can be withdrawn via an ATM & spent in all major retailers (card charges apply).


Printed Copia Metals cheques that will usually clear within 4-5 working days.

Made through the faster payments system and will usually reach your account within 2 hours. This payment type is guaranteed to credit your account the same day
